DNA paternity testing, also referred to as a parentage testing, uses DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, the biological basis of heredity, to prove or disprove the relationship between the child and the supposed father. The accuracy of paternity DNA testing is backed by the scientific fact that half of a person’s DNA comes from the father, while the other half comes from the mother.
DNA paternity tests are used to check the similarity of the DNA components of the alleged father and the child. DNA samples are taken from the child, the assumed father, and the mother, which are then compared and analyzed using sophisticated technology. A buccal swab, very similar to a cotton swab, is rubbed against the inside part of the cheeks of the people to be tested in order to gather cells from which the DNA sample will come from. The DNA is first purified, then prepared for testing.
DNA lab tests are very accurate, with little margin of error. The reason it is so accurate is because of the fact that the DNA strand for a particular individual is unique to that individual and there is no other one like it. There are instance where the testing may be falsified or inaccurate because of the contamination that has occurred. In these instances, the results typically are not conclusive.
