What do I need to do to order a paternity test?
Simply call 866-663-5822 and speak with one of our DNA representatives. They will listen to your situation and provide you with the best option to suit your DNA testing needs.
Can a paternity test be performed without including the mother?
Adding the mother to a DNA paternity test helps reduce the chances of getting an “inconclusive” test result. It is not necessary to test the mother, but it is always recommended. In cases where we may be doing a “relationship” test, adding the mother is almost always something you want to do.
If two alleged fathers are related, will the testing be valid?
It is possible for men to have similar DNA markers, therefore extended testing may need to be performed till one man is excluded. The laboratory must be notified of the situation before the testing process begins.
How could testing be performed if the alleged father is missing or deceased?
There are several testing options depending on the situation:
If the alleged father is deceased, generally the coroner’s or medical examiner’s office would have taken a tissue sample or could supply whole blood. If a usable sample is provided, we can conduct a paternity test using the deceased father’s sample.
If the father simply isn’t available for testing, the next route would be using the grandparents of the alleged father. The probability of paternity is always higher when using both Grandmother and Grandfather, however you will still receive accurate results using just one of them.
If the alleged father and alleged paternal grandparents are not available for testing, then relationship testing would be recommended.
Do I need a court order or a physician’s order to get a paternity test?
No. We offer confidential testing where individuals can order either a legal or a non-legal DNA test. However, New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), requires a court order or doctor’s order. You can simply contact your child’s pediatrician and ask them for a prescription for a paternity test. Most doctors will be more than happy to help.
Are samples taken by blood or buccal swabs?
There is no difference in the DNA obtained from buccal swabs and blood. A buccal swab is rubbed along the inner cheek of the mouth, which collects cells that contain the DNA.
What if the alleged father and child are in different cities?
Not a problem! We will schedule the alleged father for collection in his area and do the same for the child. Once both samples are received, the testing process will begin.
If a non-legal DNA test is needed, what other samples could be provided?
If a buccal swab is not able to be provided, you can also use a toothbrush, hair(must be plucked for the head) or fingernails. With hair, it can be tricky because it must be pulled from the root and not cut. Also, with newborns the hair is often too fine to retract DNA. Always be sure to put your specimens in paper envelopes. If you put a buccal swab in a plastic bag, it creates condensation and will ruin the specimen.
Can you do a paternity test before the child is born?
That would be a pre-natal paternity test and the answer is no. A pre-natal paternity test is often performed by doing an amniocentesis with mother’s who have a high risk pregnancy. For paternity testing purposes it is very difficult to find a certified physician that is willing to perform the test. It is recommended to wait until the child is born to perform testing.
